In this eco-friendly workshop, students will make plant- based developers from plant materials found in nature. The 2-mile walk will include a discussion of the geology of the ore deposits used for iron smelting and glass manufacturing. We will cover geologic features including former barrier islands, back bays, glacial era landforms, and stream characteristics. Participants will learn how such past geologic events created today's uplands, wetlands, vernal ponds, and streams. Led by Pierre Lacombe, retired USGS geologist. Registration opens April 1. Register through Wharton State Forest by calling the Batsto Visitor Center at (609) 561-0024.

    This exciting program involves using special UV flashlights that allow us to see UV-induced visible fluorescence, an amazing phenomenon that would normally be invisible to us. Various plants, invertebrates, mushrooms and more glow in different dazzling colors at night. Observations from these walks can help us to understand why certain organisms glow and reveal possible adaptive advantages. Enjoy this brand-new topic as we take the time to closely observe and learn about the plants that were present during the Carboniferous Period, 330 million years ago. Our walk around the park will take us past Equisetum and Lycopodium and other examples of ancient plants. Difficulty: easy-moderate; crushed stone or paved path with some steps. Miles: 1.8.
