When Art Smith moved to Mount Holly from Phoenix two years ago, he was immediately attracted to the waters of the creek and to those of the mill race. His first paintings here were of the Rancocas and he has continued to explore this subject with sketches and acrylic paintings. At the same time, Art became interested in the work of Mount Holly painter, Hugh Campbell. Art was inspired by his artistic interpretations of New Jersey landscapes, buildings, but most specifically, the Rancocas. Several of his paintings of the creek have been a visual reference for Art’s paintings. These paintings of the Rancocas Creek are his visual response to the beauty of these waters.

Paint Brushes in Nature – Let’s get creative and search the ground for natural items to create a winter 3-D art project. This program is designed for children ages 3-5 accompanied by a parent or guardian. Register online. There is no charge for this program, but participants need to be Rancocas Nature Center members. During this 2-hour program, students will learn about bear ranges in the US and NJ and how they have changed over time. We’ll tie in what they eat, how their diet changes through the seasons, and some of the traits that help them survive. The environmentally-themed six-week series is aimed at homeschoolers, ages 6 to 11, and incorporates model making, science experiments, art, ecology, journaling, and nature study. Each session will involve indoor/outdoor learning and investigation, weather permitting, so please dress appropriately. In the case of severe inclement weather, the class will be rescheduled to the following Friday morning. Participants must register for the full 6-week series and be Rancocas Nature Center family members. Minimum class size is 10 students. Cost: $75 for the 6-week series. Register online. Series continues January 24, February 7, 21, March 13, 27 and April 10. Registration is for full 6 week period. Payments must be made at the Rancocas Nature Center.
