Veteran Affairs Health Care

Statistics

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) operates the largest health care system in the United States, caring for nearly 5 million veterans per year. The VA has about 1,300 care facilities including 163 VA medical centers of which 137 provide nursing home care.

Qualifications

Contrary to common belief, every veteran is not automatically entitled to VA health care. It is principally directed toward treating veterans with service-connected conditions, certain combat veterans, and low income veterans.

Very elderly veterans with wartime service also receive priority care. In general, other veterans have lower priority and may have to pay for any care they receive.

Facilities Used

Most Burlington County veterans use the Philadelphia Regional Veterans Hospital or the VA clinic located on Fort Dix.
